The US Environmental Protection Agency recently announced that the agency will conduct safety audits for 18 industrial chemicals in 2013 and 2014. Among these substances are 3 flame retardants, 4 fragrance compounds, and 5 chlorinated hydrocarbons. It is understood that the EPA's chemical approval process will be used to determine whether a particular substance is to be controlled. The 18 kinds of chemicals to be audited announced this time are only a small part of the chemicals that the department decided to evaluate safety risks. If the EPA discovers that a chemical poses a significant risk of harm to the human body or the environment, the EPA will implement controls or take other regulatory actions in accordance with the Toxic Substances Control Act. However, if the substance is found to be safe in its current use after the audit, the EPA may not do it and it will not take other actions. The 18 chemicals are specifically: 1-bromopropane; 1,1-dichloroethane; 1,2-dichloroethane; 1,2-dichloropropane; trans-1,2-dichloroethylene; ,1,2-trichloroethane; p-t-octylphenol; di(2-ethylhexyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrabromophthalic acid (TBPH); bis(2-ethyl) Hexyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrabromobenzoate; tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate; 6-bromoindole-3-carbaldehyde; 2,4,6-tri-tert-butyl Phenol; benzene sulfonyl hydrazide; octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane; and 4 fragrance compounds.
