According to reports, the stable operation of Tiangong No. 2 and the space rendezvous and docking are inseparable from the attitude control system. The radiation-resistant quartz glass is the core component of the spacecraft attitude control system. The solar cell windsurfing of Tiangong 2 is the source of power for space operation, and its performance directly affects the operational life and reliability of satellites and space stations. The high-strength anti-irradiation glass cover sheet developed by the Building Materials Institute became the "bullet-proof garment" of the solar cell energy system.

The Building Materials Institute is the only domestic technical unit that has mastered the radiation-resistant quartz glass. Relying on technology accumulation, the institute has systematically studied various key processes to form a new generation of crystal powder processing technology, doping material preparation technology, doped quartz glass melting technology and radiation-resistant quartz glass heat treatment technology, which has improved the level of process automation. In 2015, it took the lead in revising the National Military Standard for the Specification of Radiation-Resistant Quartz Glass to ensure the smooth implementation of various space launch missions.
