The world's first super "human brain" computer came out: with a million processor core

<

It cost 15 million pounds of funds. After 20 years of conception and more than 10 years of construction, the world's first supercomputer that simulates the human brain finally appeared in front of us.

On November 6th, it was reported that the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom recently succeeded in creating a subversive computer, the Spiking Neural Network Architecture (SpiNNaker). The machine has 1 million processor cores and 1,200 interconnected boards. Each of the chips carries 100 million moving parts and can perform more than 200 million operations per second. The most distinctive feature is that SpiNNaker models biological neurons much faster than any other existing machine and works like a "human brain." Scientists can also use it to build brain models that aid in the study of brain diseases.

SpiNNaker is not just a computer, it can also be used on other machines. For example, the robot SpOmnibot uses SpiNNaker's system to interpret real-time visual information, and when navigating, it also finds objects that have been ignored in the past.

The basic unit of brain processing information is biological neurons, which originally exist only in organisms, while SpiNNaker simulates neuronal activity through a core processor. In the human brain, 100 billion neurons are simultaneously discharged and send signals to thousands of target neurons. SpiNNaker can send billions of information to thousands of different destinations simultaneously through real-time simulation of neurons. For traditional computers, although there are other computers that have the same number of processors as SpiNNaker, these computers are connected by sending information from point A to point B, and cannot achieve the same speed as SpiNNaker. It can be said that SpiNNaker is a subversion of existing computer technology.

Steve Furber, a project conceiver and professor of computer engineering at the University of Manchester, said that the connection mechanism of traditional supercomputers is not suitable for real-time modeling of the brain. He believes that SpiNNaker can scale in real time compared to any other machine. A larger neural network.

The construction of SpiNNaker originated in 2006. The main design and manufacturing organization is the University of Manchester School of Computer Science, which is now supported by the EU Human Brain Project. For more than a decade, SpiNNaker has achieved a technological leap. Since April 2016, SpiNNaker has used 500,000 core processors, and now it has 1 million core processors, twice as many as in the past. And SpiNNaker obviously doesn't stop there. The human brain has about 100 billion neurons. The goal of the SpiNNaker creator is to allow the machine to simulate 1 billion neurons in real time, up to 1% of the human brain.

Studies have shown that at present, most people develop and utilize less than 10% of the human brain, and 3% can be normal. If the future SpiNNaker can reach the target of 1% and then use it on a large scale, it must be a revolution in social productivity.
