According to an external report, Daimler and Renault are currently negotiating and cooperating to develop and produce large-scale MPVs as part of the expansion of the partnership. Daimler's cooperation with Volkswagen in the light commercial vehicle sector is ending its crisis and is now expected to turn to Renault for new opportunities.
Dialogue and Joint Development of MPV
According to reports, Daimler and Renault announced that they are in a dialogue and discussed jointly creating a large MPV. Daimler spokesperson UtaLeitner confirmed that "Demler and Renault are in early negotiations and have not yet made a decision on possible production sites." Renault spokesman Raluca Barb also confirmed that both parties are negotiating.
The French "Tribune" recently disclosed that the large MPV jointly developed by Daimler and Renault will be produced at Renault's French factory. At present, Renault's French plant has a low operating rate and plans to put into operation its partner models, including a project announced recently that it will assemble Nissan's new-generation Micra at the Frings factory. However, Daimler and Renault spokesman did not confirm the new MPV settled in the French factory.
According to the data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association ACEA, in the first quarter of this year, sales of micro-facets/MPVs in Europe fell 9.8% year-on-year to 347,517 units.
Since 2010, Daimler, Renault, and Nissan have established cooperative relations, and both parties have continuously expanded their cooperation. The Citan microfabrics that Daimler currently produces and sells are based on Renault Kangoo.
From Volkswagen to Renault
Daimler currently cooperates with Volkswagen AG in the field of light commercial vehicles. The former manufactures 40,000 Crafter vans/MPVs for the public at the Düsseldorf plant in Germany. This model uses the same technology platform as Mercedes-Benz Linear Technology. It will be terminated in 2016.
Informed sources said: "The public clearly requested their own commercial vehicle business unit to independently develop Crafter's successor model." The reason is that the public is stepping up its ties with its subsidiary, Mann, and its commercial vehicle technology has been enhanced.
In March 2012, Volkswagen had stated that it may consider not extending the cooperation with Daimler and will not develop the subsequent model of the Crafter van. In September, Volker Mornhinweg, the head of Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle business, said that he would negotiate with the public about extending cooperation.
On January 9 this year, Volkswagen announced that it will sign the Domination and Profit and Loss Transfer Agreement (DPLTA) with Mann to achieve full control over the latter. After that, Volkswagen stated that it would offer to acquire the shares of Mann not held.
