Brazil’s Vale announced on the 23rd that it had extended an agreement with the government for the lease of a mine in Selkipe State in the northeast of the country, and announced that it will build Brazil’s largest potash plant there to reduce import dependence.

President Rosoff of Brazil participated in the signing ceremony of the agreement and delivered a speech. She said that Brazil is one of the world's major agricultural product producers, but more than 90% of potassium fertilizers rely on imports. Reducing the dependence on foreign fertilizers, reducing the prices of agricultural products, and then increasing the competitiveness in the international market are important strategic contents of Brazilian agricultural development.

After extending the lease agreement for the mine, Vale announced that it will invest USD 4 billion to set up a factory to use the potassium chloride mine there to produce NPK fertilizer. The plant is scheduled to be put into production in 2014, when it will produce 1.2 million tons of potash fertilizer and create more than 4,000 new jobs.

Official figures show that in 2011, Brazil’s fertilizer imports amounted to US$9.138 billion.
